The plight of the Mossel Bay Skipper Foundation to help six young local sailors to compete internationally and to show off Mossel Bay's talent in two prestigious world championships have inspired MosselbayonTheline to also help them to fulfill their dream.
Since 2006, Rob and Elfie Holden have been training aspirant young sailors in Mossel Bay the tricks of the trade and instilled in them a lifelong passion for this wonderful sport. Accomplished sailors themselves who have competed professionally in various local and four world championships, the Holden couple moved to Mossel Bay in 2005 - one of the best sailing destinations in the world!
In the past 13 years, more than 800 local sailors of all ages and experience levels - including youth from underprivileged communities - were trained by this passionate couple. In 2016 they established the Mossel Bay Skipper Foundation which also offers World Sailing and SAS recognized sailing courses on Dinghies and Catamarans from beginner levels through to advance levels.
It is especially Mossel Bay's vulnerable youth who benefits tremendously by the Holden's initiative and sponsored training courses. Apart from technical and soft skills, the sailing environment also equips them with attributes such as commitment, discipline and ethics, which prepare them for national and international employment opportunities in the marine industry.
The young sailors are also encouraged to plough back into the Mossel Bay community by taking a gap year after matric to assist with the training of other young wanna-be sailors. Four of the former students are currently working abroad - training sailors in various countries.
The six young local sailors - all from Point High and Sao Bras high schools - who will be competing in two World Championships are:
Juniors:
Tera Team: Ashley Layland (14), Ruzaide Kannemeyer (17) and Jowayden Jacobs (15) who will be competing in the RS Tera World Championships from 4 - 9 August 2019 in Sweden.
Seniors:
Topper team: James Bull (16), Waydon Goliath (17) and Bradon Kretzmann who will be competing in the Open World Championships from 22 - 26 July in Mendenblik, Holland, with their "sailing parents", Rob and Elfie Holden at Santos Beach.
