WHO ARE WE?

MosselbayonTheline is an independent, non-political and objective online community newspaper and media platform FOR the community BY the community. Initially focusing on Mossel Bay, our aim is to unite the community, keep them informed with factual and unbiased content, work together towards identifying and solving problems and most of all – to SHOWCASE our spectacular South Cape and its extraordinary people, creatures and features to the rest of the world!

WHY?

Since the costly printed media has become mostly outdated and unable to keep up with the fast pace of modern life and the amount of breaking news, digital media is the way to go! Not only is the internet immediately and within everyone’s reach, it has UNlimited reach potential and is by far the fastest, cheapest and most powerful and popular social media platform. Mossel Bay does not have an INdependent community news platform where sensitive issues and irregularities can be investigated independently regardless of who and what is involved. So, the question should rather be WHY NOT?

MosselbayonTheline aims to fulfil many community needs and necessities:

  • To Inform: A little knowledge about something is often more dangerous than no knowledge at all. It invariably leads to gossip, misunderstanding and in-house fighting, which divide and weaken a community. By keeping the community informed about all relevant municipal and political decisions, happenings and new developments on a regular and transparent basis via trustworthy, impartial, factual and investigative reporting and journalism, everybody knows what is going on and thus no need for gossip, guessing and gobsmackedness.
    * To Promote: Providing a solid, professional platform from which to promote and broadcast the beauty, businesses, talents and many other assets of Mossel Bay and the wild, wonderful Garden Route to the whole wide world.

  • * Watch Dog: No community can prosper and exist peacefully without strong, fair and transparent leadership and accountability from authorities. One of the many functions of a media platform is to be a watchdog for the community by investigating, exposing and reporting on controversial and contentious issues, malpractices and actions by individuals, authorities and businesses that pose a threat or are not in the interest of the community as a whole.

  • * VOICE: To GIVE a Voice to the unheard and to BE a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. We would LOVE to hear your stories, gripes and concerns and to publish it in order to share successes or to help find solutions for problems. Confidentiality rules will apply if requested and if it is in the interest of the community, we will gladly investigate sensitive issues.

  • * To Entertain: MosselbayonTheline is dedicated to supplying you with plenty of entertaining stories and fun gimmicks as we grow and expand to incorporate more and more social media entertainment, games and competitions. But we cannot do it alone – we need YOUR input and ideas to ensure all community needs and wants are met to become a powerful and entertaining media platform – the MOUTH for the SOUTH!
    * Rome was not built in a day . . . so hang on, tell us what you want and watch this space!

HOW?

The conventional media - especially printed media and INdependent, investigative journalism - is at an all-time low internationally due to various factors, not the least being the eruption of social media platforms spouting sensational 'breaking news' with graphic, gory detail non-stop at breathtaking speed. Whilst social media has numerous advantages, the danger of uncontrolled freedom of speech and unsubstantiated reports invariably lead to fake news, slander and bias misinformation/disinformation, causing even more distrust and social problems.

It is almost impossible for the mainstream media to keep up with the tsunami of social media sources and/or to verify the information timeously, and thus fake news and internet fraud often thrive undetected.

The financial impact of social media on conventional printed media is devastating, and thus time-consuming investigative journalism was the first bastion to fall in the fight for economic survival. Community newspapers have to rely on the biggest advertisers and have increasingly become the official mouthpiece and spin-doctors of local governments to ensure funding.

This trade-off and "sunshine journalism" has become the norm in most community newspapers - at the cost of true, independent and unbiased investigative journalism, leaving the door wide open for intransparency, corruption, irregularities and unhealthy wheeling and dealing which is rampant in most governmental institutions and authorities.

However, truly free, INdependent investigative journalism - one of the cornerstones of democracy - is ultimately dependent on the public, their readers, sponsorships and financial contributions.

The Good, The Bad AND the Ugly

Mosselbayontheline was initiated by a few seasoned investigative journalists in order to keep a healthy balance between community news, marketing and investigating controversial issues to find the story behind the story . . . as no town, society or community can truly flourish without watchdogs to ensure fair play for all at all times.

Please support our worthy effort to keep you abreast of exciting community events and developments as well as contentious issues and irregularities that pose a threat to the well-being of the town and its people  - the good, the bad AND the ugly!

PUTTING YOU ON THE LINE . . .

MosselbayonTheline is an INDEPENDENT community-based initiative to keep locals from Mossel Bay and surrounds informed about important issues that affect them directly and to provide a central, professional media platform to showcase the beauty and assets of the Mossel Bay region and its people to the whole wide world – BY the community, FOR the community.

Our website http://www.mosselbayontheline.co.za and accompanying Facebook Page https://web.facebook.com/mosselbayontheline/ offer an unlimited target reach.

Our sister site www.weskusontheline.co.za has proven to be extremely popular and in great demand with a daily FB post reach of between 25 000 to 65 000; while the website hits toppled the 500 000 mark in November 2016 . . . (That website is awaiting new management since we relocated to Mossel Bay and the idea is to eventually link them for even greater exposure – but it already proved the demand for and popularity of such a community initiative.)

Mosselbayontheline already maintains a weekly target rate of between 20 000 to 45 000 and at this rate we hope to reach and maintain our 1 million target audience by the end of 2018.

We tackle ISSUES, not INDIVIDUALS, to find SOLUTIONS

That said, mosselbayonTheline is still in its baby shoes and we hope to develop it into a formidable, multi-functional professional media platform to support and expand the efficiency of existing communication tools and newspapers in the area – to keep residents informed, address important issues and be a watchdog and spokesperson to those who cannot speak for themselves. Once a week we also share our top-articles nationally and internationally and it is heart-warming to see how many expats LOVE to follow news about their beloved SOUTH CAPE region!

This can only be achieved with the help, input and support from local businesses and experts. We will truly appreciate your expertise, input and support in this regard. We are developing and fine-tuning advertising space and tools on our website to also offer a central and permanent marketing platform for businesses at very low cost – mainly because we WANT to showcase our unique and innovative peeps and the variety of services offered along the South Cape Coastline.
