An amazing walk from Wilderness to Victoria Bay along the railway tracks includes a breathtaking bridge crossing, dark train tunnels and glorious coastal views . . .

kaaimans elna gousKaaimans Ria vd Westhuizen3

The 2,23 km walk from the parking area in Wilderness to Victoria Bay is an easy slackpacking hike that takes you past the famous "Kaaimans Grotto" that is now only reachable via the old Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe railway line. The latter is not in use anymore as large sections of the track are still covered by rubble and soil from the landslide in 2006.

A group of eager hikers took these beautiful pics and videos to give you an indication of what to expect! Thank you Ria van der Westhuizen, Anneke Cilliers and Elna Gous for this REAL LIFE virtual experience!

 The Walk:

At the westerly end of Wilderness there is a parking area where you can leave your car (Sands Road). Above there is the railway line; follow it leaving Wilderness behind. After about 700 metres and passing the first tunnel, you’ll reach the “Kaaimans Grotto”, in the past a very popular restaurant only reachable via train, now a place of eccentric artwork and pilgrimage run by Clifford and friends who love to show you around. The cave itself is not supplied with electricity, but equipped with fresh water, toilet facilities, cooking facilities and a wooden deck with unbeatable views. The cave also offers accommodation for up to 14 people – for the courageous ones.

Keep moving along the railway line in westerly directions until you reach a bridge crossing - the Kaaimans River mouth. Further on there are two more tunnels and another bridge before you’ll reach Victoria Bay, famous for swimming and surfing.

Please note: This walk must be in a group (safety first).

Take a lunch with you and have it on your way back from Victoria Beach at the Kaaimans Grotto, enjoying the view – and please don’t forget to leave a small contribution behind for using their deck, it is much appreciated!

Beautiful view . . . spot a whale? Anneke Cilliers took this video of the breathtaking scenery . . .

CAREFUL WHERE YOU STEP!  Ria van der Westhuizen took this video of the railway track to warn hikers to take care . . .

Anneke Cilliers put these stunning videos together of the Kaaimans Grotto where a few people have artfully created an "out of this world" experience . . . Go and have a look for yourself!

OH MY SOUL - Wôtalot of POT is on its way to hit Mossel Bay . . . ?

This coastal gem upon which Bartolomeu Dias stumbled some 530 years ago has always boasted a huge, welcoming HEART offering safe shelter and prolific sustenance to every creature from land, sea or sky that set foot here over the eons.

This coming week, however, the townfolks will be bending over backwards to set yet another record by showcasing the town's SOUL to all and sundry with the biggest POT of SOUP ever as the focus point of The Soul Festival - a unique POTpourri of soulful art, live music and entertainment like only Mossel Bay peeps can dish up.

The mammoth number 760 steel pot, measuring more than 2M in diameter and weighing more than 2,5 ton, dwarfs even the team of helpers who battle to load it onto a truck. The pot will be used to prepare soup for some 3000 festgoers  - mainly as a free meal for the underprivileged.

Although it involuntarily reminds one of cannibalism cartoons, this particular specimen comes with a truckload of innovative utensils and megafters to literally stir the pot and set the stage for the festivities.

By the time the pot arrives in Mossel Bay for next weekend's festival from 13 to 15 July, it will be unrecognizable and entitled to call any kettle black!

But the story of the pot, the people behind its resurrection and its journey to Mossel Bay, is a tale on its own for another day. Suffice to say, the pot, like all other creatures who land in Mossel Bay by hook or by crook (or crane), is here to stay!

Now is the time to get into the groove and start the count-down to yet another FIRST for Mossel Bay - a Fest with Soul to warm the heart and body and the best way to counter the icy weather! The organisers made sure the Soul Festival offers everything that touches your soul and senses - art, literature, music, great food & wine, travel, crafts, craft beer & spirits, coffee and more!  And best of all - Entrance is FREE to ensure no soul is excluded.

Here are some highlight you can look forward to:

*  25 Participating Restaurants from Gourits to Glentana

*  A Thousand Sensations of Craft Beer, Craft Gin & Wine at the Festival Arena

*  Café Gannet Festival of Wine

    weg 2

oor die see ...
As jy die seediere van naderby wil bekyk, bespreek ’n bootrit by
    Romonza (; 082 701 9031/044 690 3101).

die mens se oorsprong (in Engels: “Point Of Human Origin”). Jy kan Cape St. Blaize
sonder begeleiding besoek.

Strand. Gaan vra raad by die Toerismekantoor.

    8. KLAP ’N TOON

    weg 11

vonkelwyn, asook soesji bedien.

    weg 13
